To be considered for MBACompass.com rankings, business programs must be accredited by at least one of the three recognized business school programmatic accreditation agencies: the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), or the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE). Schools must also offer at least one online MBA program, defined as a program that can be completed completely online, or with no more than 14 days per year of onsite requirements. MBACompass offers two different types of ranking lists:
For the Best Online MBA Programs list, schools were ranked based on the percentage of alumni who hold executive-level jobs, as self-reported on their LinkedIn profiles. While this includes both online and campus students, we believe it is a reflection of the overall quality of the program as most graduates of distance MBA programs receive the same degree as graduates of campus programs do.
For the Most Affordable Online MBA Programs list, schools were ranked based on manually-collected tuition for a representative online MBA program.
Program data including available degrees, tuition rates, and details about program coursework were collected from official school websites, reflecting data for the 2019-2020 school year. These data were collected between March and September of 2019.
Programmatic accreditation and profit status of schools were collected from the official websites of the accreditation agencies.
The number of business school alumni holding positions with “executive” in their job titles was collected from LinkedIn in June of 2019. The total number of business school alumni was also collected from LinkedIn. The entire school profile on LinkedIn was used when a business school profile did not exist.
